Dune

The night spent at the dune ger camp was definitely my favorite. Plenty of hiking opportunities awaited, but considering I got there with only 2 hours of sunlight left, I stayed within a kilometer of the camp and just scampered up and down dunes and rock formations to admire the sun as it went down. There were a number of groups staying there, but you never heard them; it's quiet in Mongolia at night. The only voices were a few of the workers playing cards or another game, and they all quit at 10pm or so.

Every ger has the same basic layout. It includes an opening at the top for smoke to rise through, and many cover the rest of it with plastic (which lets in light) except for a round hole for the stove flue.

The inside. Covered with cheap flooring on top of wood slats, but they still keep the door well-decorated.

The camp.

Looking westward. I definitely want to stay here again on my next trip to Mongolia. One group of Japanese travelers went by horseback to some mountains nearby to camp out.

Late in the afternoon, looking over the dunes.

Raked by wind, not man.

Guess who?

It's Mongolia. You let things lie where they lay, including skeletons.

Of horses, of courses.

The view at night. We don't get to see the moon this clearly in HK.
