The summer doldrums

1) Jeebus, I wish I was Jim Anchower. At least he writes more frequently than me, though we both apologize for not writing. There just is nothing exciting happening lately. I'll try to keep up, but as I said to a friend the other day who asked what life here is like, I said, "Just like in any city after 4 years. You work, go home and chill out for the night. Get up, go to work. Repeat." Yes, I go out a few times a week, but not as much as I used to. Yes, there still are adventures to go on here, places to see (I've only been to Mui Wo once? Weird. And still never to Peng or Cheng Chau). But the home is an escape, and I like my apartment and after most days you just go home and read and chill out after you get done late.
2) That said, time to go back to the US. Only 3 bottles of Gumballhead left.
3) Strange influx of women cabbies lately. Had three in the last month, and saw another drive by tonight. Weird HK tidbit: when one person is in a cab, the local often will sit in the front seat.
4) Definitely not overrated: happy-hour martinis on the relatively cheap at expensive steakhouses, such as Morton's.

5) When I first moved in, there still was an abbatoir down the street from me, but it no longer was used, so I didn't have to smell entrails or that other goodness; it was long since abandoned. But I noticed at some poin in the past year that they tore down the old buildings, and now I have a view of the harbor. Unfortunately, my iphone does not have a zoom, but this is a shot about 11pm.

6) To the left of said picture, up the road, they just are finishing a new apartment building, probably about 25 stories tall or so, so a midrise. New modern design, lots of glass. I wonder if they are touting that it is right next to a garbage center, and a big one at that, one that always smells when I run or bike by? I doubt it.

7) Saw this the other day, around the other corner from me. Next to the McDonald's (HK tidbit: most McD's here have a separate register right near the front that just sells their soft-serve cones for about 25 cents US) is the Pope John Paul II Formation Centre.

And random shot from around the corner, heading back to my place via the back way: The whole street has banyon trees growing up the wall on one side.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em

Walk outside of work tonight to grab a cab; one pulls in the parking lot at work, then parks. I wait two minutes, no more cabs come by, the the previous cab turns his lights on and picks me up.
Immediately, I knew what he was doing in those two minutes. Smoking a one-hitter.
So I text two friends about this, and their responses are similar: Did you ask him if he had any extra?
Considering this is the second time this has happened - surprisingly, I never had a cabbie in Chicago whose car smelled of freshly-smoked pot - maybe I just should.
